Gatwick and Stansted are on opposite sides of London, and crossing between them by public transport is a real slog – a train into the city, a change, and another train or coach out to Essex. A Gatwick to Stansted taxi takes you directly from one terminal to the other, around 76 miles via the M25, with your luggage in the boot and a price fixed before you land.

Which way round the M25?

There are two ways round London, and your driver will choose the quicker one on the day:

• East, via the Dartford Crossing – M23 north, M25 clockwise over the QEII Bridge, then the M11. Around 76 miles and usually the faster option.
• West, past Heathrow – M25 anticlockwise round the western and northern side to the M11. A little longer, but useful when there are problems at Dartford.

Typical journey time is 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. Dartford can be very slow at weekday peaks and on Friday afternoons, so for connecting flights we suggest leaving at least four and a half to five hours between landing at Gatwick and departing Stansted.

Taxi vs train or coach

By rail you’d take Thameslink or Southern into London, change for the Stansted Express at Liverpool Street or Tottenham Hale, and allow around 2 hours 30 minutes. Coaches run directly but often take three hours or more. A taxi is direct, leaves the moment you’re through arrivals and doesn’t stop until Stansted – and with two or more of you, the fixed fare often isn’t far off the combined train tickets.

Stansted to Gatwick

For a Stansted to Gatwick taxi, your driver meets you in Stansted’s arrivals hall and takes you to Gatwick North or South Terminal. The same fixed price applies, plus the parking charge for the Stansted pickup. Tell us your Gatwick terminal, or give us your flight number and we’ll check it.

Staying overnight between flights?

If your onward flight is the next day, we can take you from Gatwick to a hotel near Stansted in the evening, then on to the terminal in the morning. It’s a common arrangement for early Ryanair and easyJet departures – just book both journeys.

Tips for the Gatwick to Stansted transfer

The Dartford Crossing is the key to this journey. Northbound traffic uses the tunnels and southbound traffic the QEII Bridge, and both can queue at peak times or when high winds close the bridge. The Dart Charge is included in your fare. If there’s a serious problem at Dartford, your driver will go the long way round via the western M25 – it adds distance but usually keeps you moving. For very early Stansted departures, an overnight stay near Stansted is often the least stressful option.
