Southampton cruise terminals

Southampton has five cruise terminals spread along the Western and Eastern Docks. Your cruise line will tell you which one your ship is using – it’s on your boarding documents and e-tickets. Add it to your booking notes and your driver will take you straight to the right berth.

The Western and Eastern Docks have separate entrances, and the traffic on embarkation mornings can be heavy. Knowing the right gate saves a lot of time, which is why we ask for your terminal name when you book.

How much is a taxi to Southampton cruise terminal?

From central London, a saloon to Southampton’s cruise terminals is typically around £135, and an estate – usually the better choice for cruise luggage – around £150. From Heathrow it’s around £110 for a saloon. For four or more passengers with cruise cases, a 6 or 8-seat MPV is the comfortable option, and the fare split between you often works out cheaper than train tickets plus a taxi from Southampton Central.

When to arrive for boarding

Most cruise lines give each passenger a boarding time or window, typically between late morning and mid-afternoon, with check-in closing two to three hours before sailing. Arriving too early usually means waiting outside the terminal; arriving too late risks missing check-in. We plan your pickup around your boarding window, allowing for the M3 and the queues at the dock gates, so you arrive with time to spare but without a long wait.

On a sailing day with several ships in port, Southampton’s roads can be busy from mid-morning. If your boarding window is early, we’ll recommend leaving London around three hours beforehand.

Flying in to join your ship

A lot of our Southampton cruise passengers arrive by air. We collect from Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton Airport and go straight to the port. Give us your flight number and your ship’s name: we’ll track the flight and time the transfer around your boarding window. If you land very early, your driver can suggest somewhere near the port for breakfast while you wait for check-in to open.

Cruise luggage tends to be bigger than airline luggage, with formal wear and shoes for every night. If in doubt, go one size up – or call us and we’ll advise.

Disembarkation day: getting home

Ships usually dock early in the morning, and passengers leave in groups throughout the morning depending on their deck and travel plans. Taxi queues at the terminals can be long when thousands of people disembark at once. Book your return in advance and your driver will be waiting outside your terminal – just keep their number handy and message them when you’re through the luggage hall. Ships do occasionally dock late, and we’ll adjust.

Taxi vs train to Southampton cruise port

There are direct trains from London Waterloo to Southampton Central, but the station is a taxi ride from the docks, and you’d be carrying cruise luggage on and off the train and through Waterloo. For couples and families, a door-to-ship taxi is far easier, and one fare for the whole car often compares well with multiple train tickets plus a local taxi at the other end.

Your embarkation day, step by step

1. The day before – we confirm your pickup time by email, based on your ship’s boarding window and the distance to Southampton.
2. Pickup – your driver arrives at the agreed time, loads your cases and checks the terminal name on your cruise documents.
3. On the road – most journeys from London take the M3; from Sussex and Kent we’ll usually take the M25 and M3 or the A27 and M27, whichever is flowing better on the day.
4. At the dock gate – your driver follows the port’s cruise traffic signs for your terminal. On busy days there may be a short queue to get in.
5. Drop-off – your driver unloads your luggage at the terminal’s baggage drop, where porters label and take it to the ship. You walk into the terminal for check-in and security.

Your cases normally appear outside your cabin later in the afternoon, so keep medication, travel documents and anything valuable in your hand luggage.

Taxi or cruise parking?

Driving yourself and parking at the port is an option, but it isn’t cheap for a week or two, and you still have the drive home after disembarkation – often after an early start. A return taxi transfer usually costs similar to, or less than, long-stay cruise parking once you factor in fuel, the M3 and the parking fee itself, and nobody in your party has to drive. For couples who both want a glass of champagne at the sailaway party, it’s an easy decision.

Staying the night before?

Some passengers prefer to stay in Southampton the night before a sailing, especially with an early boarding window or a long journey from the north. We can take you to your hotel the day before and collect you on sailing day for the short run to the terminal, or bring you straight from the airport to your hotel. Just include both journeys when you book, or call us to arrange it.

Groups, families and celebrations

Cruises are often a big occasion – a milestone birthday, an anniversary, or the whole family together for the first time in years.
