The route

From Reading, your driver usually heads east on the M4 to junction 4b, then clockwise on the M25 round to junction 7, and south on the M23 to Gatwick. The journey is typically 65 to 75 minutes. At weekday peaks, the M25 between junctions 12 and 10 can slow things down, so we’ll suggest a pickup time with a buffer. Depending on traffic, some drivers take the A329(M) and M3 before joining the M25 – whichever is quicker on the day.

Reading to Gatwick: taxi or train?

There’s a direct train from Reading to Gatwick via Guildford and Redhill, taking around 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. It’s a reasonable option for a solo traveller, but it isn’t frequent late at night or early in the morning, and you still need to get to Reading station. For couples, families and anyone with luggage – or a 6am flight – a door-to-terminal taxi is simpler and, split between several people, often comparable on cost.

For Friday afternoon or bank holiday departures, add 20 to 30 minutes – the M25 between Heathrow and junction 7 is at its busiest then.

Tips for the Reading to Gatwick journey

The M4 into the M25 is the obvious route, but when the western M25 is congested, drivers often cut south on the A329(M) and M3 to join the M25 at junction 12 instead, or take the A33 and A322 through Bracknell for pickups on that side of town.
