From Luton, your driver takes the M1 south to the M25 at junction 21, then anticlockwise round the western side of London to junction 7 and down the M23 to Gatwick. On a clear run it’s 1 hour 15 minutes; at weekday peaks, particularly around Heathrow on the western M25, allow up to 1 hour 45 minutes. For a connecting flight, we’d suggest at least four and a half hours between landing at Luton and departing Gatwick.

Luton to Gatwick by train or taxi?

Thameslink runs direct trains from Luton Airport Parkway to Gatwick, taking around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. It’s a genuine option for a solo traveller – but from Luton Airport you first need the DART shuttle down to the station, and trains through central London are busy at peak times. With luggage, children or a group, a door-to-door taxi saves a lot of effort, and splitting one fixed fare between several people usually compares well with multiple train tickets.

Tips for the Luton to Gatwick transfer

The western M25 between junctions 16 and 10 is the busiest part of this journey, especially on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons. If your connection is on a Friday, give yourself extra time.
